Bio in Brief

Lillian G. Edwards was born in Suffolk, Virginia the eldest child of three children to Harriett L. Edwards and the late Johnnie Felton Edwards, Sr. Her brother is Johnnie Felton Edwards, Jr. and her sister the late Barbara Dean Edwards.

Lillian attended East Suffolk Elementary School and was in the first graduating class of John F. Kennedy High School in 1966, where she graduated with honors.

After receiving a ‘State Teacher Scholarship,’ she attended and completed her studies in three and a half years, at Norfolk State University, earning a BS degree in Elementary Education.

The completion of her studies allowed her to begin her career even earlier than she had planned, having received a contract from the Portsmouth Public School division, in her eighth week of student teaching.

Lillian completed her student teaching on a Friday and began her new career on Monday of the next week, in Portsmouth Virginia, at Mt. Hermon Elementary School.

Lillian wanted to give back to the school division that educated her. So, she happily accepted a contract offer from the Suffolk Public School System the next school year.

When the opportunity presented itself, Lillian made the move to Chesapeake Public Schools, a neighboring school division in Chesapeake, Virginia, hoping it would lead to advancement in her chosen field.

Lillian then returned to school, Old Dominion University, to earn her masters degree in elementary supervision and administration. When Lillian retired in 2001, after thirty-one years of service, she had held the following positions in the field of education:

Classroom Teacher
Reading Diagnostician
Educational Diagnostician
Reading Resource Teacher
Elementary School Assistant Principal &
Elementary School Principal

While attending college, Lillian held the position of doctors’ assistant/lab tech for doctors L. T. and Margaret Reid, for three years. She also briefly worked as the clerk, in the meter reading department of VEPCO, now Dominion Virginia Power.

It was her childhood dream to become an elementary school principal and the dream became a reality in fall of 1991, when she was promoted to Principal of Camelot Elementary School in Chesapeake.

Lillian is the divorced mother of three sons. She is a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; a lifetime member of the PTA; and a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia, where she currently serves on the Family Life Center Board.

After retiring, Lillian decided she wanted to read the Bible cover-to-cover and acquire Bible instruction, to increase her comprehension and discernment of the Word. The end result of her four years of studies earned her

A Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Church of New Life Ministry, 2007, California.

An Honorary Doctor of Biblical Studies Degree from New Horizon Ministry, 2008, Wisconsin.
