Michelle Obama's Right To Bare Arms

Unless you've been living under a rock the past week Michelle Obama has been everywhere, and I couldn't be happier!  It is no secret that I love beautiful, glamorous, classy, intelligent women and NOT  for the obvious reason.  I grew up with a beautiful, glamorous, classy mother who was at 110% every time she stepped out of the house. For the first time in my life when I see the First Lady I see something I've never seen before, MY MOTHER. My mothers background (and quite few other Black Women I know) is very similar to that of the First Lady's, from humble beginning's to higher education to the top of their chosen professions and raising children (with or without a spouse).  It has been overwhelming and hard to digest that not only do we have a Black President but we have a Black First Lady.  The impact socially and globally that Michelle Obama will have on the Black Female image is earth shattering. Now the image of the wife of the most powerful man on the planet can contrast the ghetto bitch on The Maury Povich Show who's waiting for Maury reveal who her "baby's daddy" is.

Negating the accomplishment's and images of Black Women who paved the way for Michelle Obama would be irresponsible and disrespectful and that is not my intent. But the fact is a Black First Lady is not the same as a singer, actress or athlete.  While many Black women have risen to the ranks of successful CEO's, Billionares, Secretary of State and elected offices the impact is not the same.

Michelle Obama is not the Uber untouchable Diva Diana Ross or the regimented Condoles Rice. These women's accomplishments are incredible but they are not the women you'd feel comfortable walking across the room to and striking up a conversation (well I would).  They're not accessible, which isn't a bad thing, but Michelle is and the reason is simple, she's the WOMAN (not Black Woman) everyone knows.  She's the wife, mother and career woman next door, the lady you work and have lunch with everyday, the single working mother you see in Target and every other woman (I so wish I could put in a sound bite of Chaka Kahn's version of "I'm Every Woman") we all know who transcends race and economics.

Ok got that out of the way, now to what inspired this entry, LET  MICHELLE OBAMA SHOW HER ARMS ALL SHE WANTS!  While I don't agree with EVERYTHING she's worn (let's forget about the election night dress, not fab at all) I give her credit for being herself, tasteful and accessible.  In the looooonnnnnggggg drawn out two years that the campaign lasted I cant recall Michelle Obama wearing five figure gowns or clothes (borrowed or bought) from upscale department stores, correct me if I'm wrong.  While I don't shop at J.Crew (too plain for my taste) I respect the example and what about the dress from White House Black Market  (kinda prophetic ) that she wore on The View?  She's not flashing her vajayjay, having a nipple slip on the red carpet or wearing Versace (not there is ANYTHING wrong with Versace, I cant wait  for the day when I can overdress myself from head to toe in it) with cleavage to her navel (although that dress was and still is FEROSHIOUS) she's showing her ARMS!  When did arms become taboo.  I understand it's new to see a First Lady in a sleeveless dress but lets keep it in perspective, it's sleeveless not topless!

So to The First Lady, you hit the gym and eat sensibly, you earned the right to bare arms.

Ooops, I was wrong, there was another First Lady who showed her arms but I cant remember her name.  Can anyone help me with the lady's name  on the right?
