David Letterman Owes Sarah Palin And Her Children An Apology
There is no other way to start this off but with the bottom line, DAVID LETTERMAN was wrong, DEAD WRONG.
The jokes that David Letterman made in reference to the Sarah Palin's daughter were so wrong that when I heard them I was stopped in my tracks. Letterman's response and explanation did nothing for me. Governor Palin was in New York on official business and attended a baseball game with her 14 year old daughter Willow, NOT Britsol (the teen who was 17 and pregnant during the campaign). Letterman started off by making a joke about Governor Palin sporting a "slutty flight attendant look" ok, that was tacky but he went even further. He made a joke about Governor Palins daughter getting "knocked up by Alex Rodriguez", pardon my language WHAT THE FUCK WAS HE THINKING!?
During the election President Obama made it perfectly clear that "kids are off limits". Now I agreed with that but I was conflicted because we live in the real world and lets face it ANYONE in front of the camera is a target and I knew that Bristol was going to be subjected to unwanted attention. There were jokes and "standard" comments made about pregnant teens but for the most part I felt that most in the media were "respectful". I will add that during the election I wondered if Governor Palin had the respect of the media and general public the way President Obama and Senator McCain did would things have been different?
As you can imagine Governor Palin and her husband have fired back and rightfully so. A parents instinct are to defend their children at all cost and thats how it should be. Letterman has offered the explanation that he was joking about 18 year old Bristol not 14 year old Willow but I'm sorry, no dice. The 18 year old is as off limits as the 14 year old (even though some of the ladies on The View made a good point that once Bristol when on a speaking tour, talk shows and other high profile appearances she opens herself up to the scrutinity that comes with it) it's only fair and the right thing to do. Now Governor Palin has made one mistake in this situation, knowing that Letterman was speaking of the older child not the 14 year old and acting as if she didn't. I detected a bit of media manipulation on her part but you know what, I give her a pass because it's how this game is played. As my blog clearly indicates I am no fan of Governor Palin but I understand her reaction and I agree, leave her kids alone!
David Letterman went too far and I hope WE, the viewing public, hold him accountable for his actions. Regardless of what we think of the Governor that does not make it okay to make wildly inappropriate comments about her children.
